*If you are running Windows Professional or Ultimate and you want to keep your applications without re-installing them, then your only option is to upgrade to the 'Pro' version of Windows 8.

A Cost Effective Method to Upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8

Microsoft is currently offering Windows 8.1 as a free upgrade to Window 8.
Since Windows 8 can be purchased for well under $100.00, it would make sense to first upgrade to Windows 8, then once installed upgrade for free to Windows 8.1 via the Microsoft Store.
(You can save anywhere from $40 - $50 dollar via this method as opposed to purchasing the retail version of Windows 8.1 for around $119.99)

Before upgrading, as an extra cost savings, you should decide if you'll want/need the 'Pro' version of Windows 8. Windows 8 would be fine for most users, though as it was with Windows XP/7, you'll need the 'Pro' version of Windows 8 for the business environment. The Pro version is required if you intend to join the device to a network.  You'll also need the Pro version if you plan to remote into the computer from another device.

The retail version of Windows 8.1 Pro goes for around $199.00, thus the compelling reason to first go to Windows 8.0 Pro ,then upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro for free via the Microsoft Store.

Last word...

To save a bit further, you can purchase Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro from 3rd party online sites.
Be careful in doing so, and use a payment method like Paypal in case you encounter any issues.
For example, I purchased my copy of Windows 8 Pro from "http://www.discountmountainsoftware.com/" for $82.90, used it to upgrade a Windows 7 Pro machine. Afterwards, I proceeded to the Microsoft store for the free Windows 8.1 upgrade.  I saved over $116.00 dollars.

"This content requires HDCP for playback" Apple TV fix

Perhaps you are having issues viewing Netflix, iTunes or any other streaming content via your Apple TV device? First, the short answer regarding the fix (in most cases)... 1). Leave your Apple TV device ON. 2). Turn OFF your TV for 10 seconds. 3). Turn ON your TV. 4). Now attempt to view the content on your Apple TV (hopefully without error). Behind the answer... Depending on the content being streamed, there is an authentication process that takes place when you request content. The user is usually oblivious of the this, that is until something goes wrong. HDCP stands for (H)igh bandwidth (D)igital (C)ontent (P)rotection. Even if you are only mildly interested in the 'what' of HDCP, I highly recommend checking out this simple yet concise and exhaustive explanation on Wikipedia, which can be found here... Can't (or no longer can) Connect via VPN to Work, School or whatever

If you find you no longer can connect to your work, school or from a particular Hotspot it could be due to them (the network) no longer has the port (door) opened that allows the type of vpn traffic your device is using in its attempt to connect. As it relates to this post, I'm more specifically referring to connections that use the PPTP vpn protocol (Windows, Mac... etc). The PPTP protocol is now considered more vulnerable from a network security perspective than several other current VPN alternatives.  In many cases, it's been causing headaches for Network Administrators who should have migrated from its use by now. Perhaps it's due to the particular bubble I leave in, but it sure seems like there was not much lead time (notice) regarding the impending switch... weeks maybe? Apple users need to take particular note ... As of iOS 10, PPTP vpn connects are no longer supported from any of their devices.  I speak a bit more on this here .

How to Restore / Import a Garageband file from iCloud

After long since completing a song I composed in Garageband that I imported into Pro Tools 12, I realized I wanted to add an additional track to the version that was once on my iPad.  The problem... it was on an iPad I now had since restored from its former jailbroken state.  After 'un - jailbreaking' the iPad, I restored it from a backup that was created before I created the song in Garageband. Fortunately, I previously had backed up the song via the 'old' Garageband to my iCloud account. The bad news... it was not initially apparent how to download/import it back into my newly restored iPad.  If you too find yourself in this situation, the following should help ...  1). Make sure you have your iCloud Drive enabled .  You would think that's been the case since all this time you had been saving it to iCloud ( well... yes and no ). Check by going to ... Settings > iCloud > iCloud Drive > [ON] . 2). Now go into Garageband and on the ...
